Sat, Feb 13: Rick Trevino

As a kid growing up, Rick followed his father’s lead into music. Rooted in Texan and Mexican tradition, Rick Senior also loved 60s and 70s pop/rock. "That stuff made a big impression on me," Rick remembers. The music I heard at home was organic and powerful and it eventually led to the style of country that I'm playing today.

After Columbia VP Steve Buckingham flew to Austin to hear Trevino perform in '91, the young performer signed with the label and began a run of successes that included a gold album and several number one/Top Ten singles, including “She Can’t Say I Didn’t Cry” and “Learning as You Go.”

A turning point came in 1999, when he took part on the second release by the critically acclaimed, all-star ensemble Los Super 7. That was when he met and befriended Raul Malo who remains a regular writing partner, producer, and close friend to this day. Their collaborations won attention from producer Paul Worley (Martina McBride, Dixie Chicks), who signed Trevino and co-produced his Warner Bros. release, In My Dreams.

Trevino is no longer a breakout sensation; instead, he stands at a pivotal point, his performance infused by the exuberance and soul of his earliest work yet seasoned by the pleasures and challenges that experience brings. "What keeps my juices flowing is the fact that I earn my living from playing shows. I provide for my family by staying out on the road, and that keeps me focused on evolving as an entertainer which means evolving as well as a singer and songwriter."

As much as this sums up all that Trevino brings to the table, it points as well to where he’s going. "I was thinking about that a while back, when I went to see the Rolling Stones play at Zilker Park here in Austin. That was hands-down the best concert I’ve ever seen, not because of the amazing set or the 42,000 people who came to see them, but because they were having so much fun as they played. That’s how it was when I recorded with Freddy Fender and that’s how it is anytime I’m in the studio or when I’m performing on stage with my band.

Trevino is currently engaged in the creation of a made-for-the-net-series in which he plans to acknowledge his debt to the artists, musicians, and music styles that have made an impact on his musical identity. The project will feature audio and video down-loads, blogs, vignettes, and snippets of behind-the-scenes video of Rick and his band in the studio.

Sat, Feb 20: Deryl Dodd

Deryl Dodd has made a name for himself as one of the most authentic artists in country music. From the Texas music circuit to Nashville, national tours to chart topping hits, he’s seen the country music industry from the top. He got his call to stardom as a guitar player and backup singer with Martina McBride and on tour with country music icons like Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn. After a life-threatening illness nearly ended his career in the late 90’s, Dodd re-emerged with a new appreciation for life and a stronger loyalty to
himself and his music.

Born in Dallas, Texas, he grew up heavily influenced by the soulful gospel music of the
Pentecostal church where his grandfather was pastor. Learning to play guitar at age seven, banjo at thirteen, and pedal steel at sixteen Deryl was performing in honkytonks and dancehalls by the time he graduated college. Shortly after moving to Nashville in 1991, he began playing guitar and singing backup for Martina McBride and opening for country superstar Garth Brooks. His ability as a songwriter earned him a publishing deal with BMG Music where he penned several tracks on two of Tim McGraw’s multi-platinum albums. Word spread quickly around Nashville as he gained recognition playing in Tracy Lawrence’s band and singing harmony vocals for Martina McBride, Radny Foster and George Ducas.

His health continued to deteriorate until eventually, he had trouble lifting his arms, barely able to comb his hair or play guitar. After several tests, Dodd was diagnosed with viral encephalitis, a life threatening illness which attacks the central nervous system, bringing a “bitter end” to his current efforts and future plans to publicize the new album. Though he was able to overcome his illness, he still faced many obstacles on his “road to recovery,” including rebuilding his career. It was a slow, hard fight as Deryl regained his strength -- this time
with a new appreciation for life, and a stronger loyalty to himself, his fans, and his music.
